relax/routine

I've developed a routine on my days off: taking an afternoon break from painting in my studio, grabbing a latte, and wandering around my neighborhood in Brooklyn withmy best friends: my favorite fedora and a cozy Isabel Marant cocoon coat.

Bill Cunningham New York

FINALLY saw this movie, it's been playing in theaters here in NYC forever, and I am so glad I did. What an amazing man, so full of joie de vivre and passion for his work, so optimistic about the world and it's possibilities. I've never left a movie feeling so happy and inspired, I went straight to my studio to paint.

I've loved his photos for years, and now that I know how much he loves not just his work but everyone he photographs, I adore them even more. Just look at the gorgeous juxtapositions in the collage below, and the feeling of spring that comes from the inclusion of all the cherry blossoms and magnolias:

He says : "The wider world perceives fashion as frivolity that should be done away with. The point is that fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life. I don't think you can do away with it, it would be like doing away with civilisation." I couldn't agree more!

Seriously, go see this movie!

Isabal Marant

Sporty, sexy, a little crazy, the Isabel Marant show gave me a lot look forward to. "Pardon?" You might be saying, "Satin track pants? No merci!". But just take a look at some of these patterns and details:

and then, remember that Isabel's collection is so huge but the runway show limited to make a certain aesthetic point. These days with Isabel's shows I look for my favorite prints and color chords and then wait excitedly to see the multitude of silhouettes and fabrics they'll come in. Love the snakeskin jeans and intarsia knits! The colors reminded me of these paintings I just saw at the deKooning retrospective at MOMA:

If you are in NYC, do not miss this show! It is bangin'!

modern times

loved everything about the jil sander show (except for the twee little hats). so fresh and modern and clean, the textures and shapes reminded me so much of matisse's collages:

going green

suddenly attracted to all things green. thrifted this amazing fisherman sweater (a little proenza schouler-ish, mais non?) and added some turquoise and green jade jewels to my collection. is this what they mean by a green thumb?

high/low

so, the jcrew presentation was fabulous. the colors, the proportions, everything was great. there was a bit of buzz about how jcrew didn't belong at fashion week, but when i looked around during the week so many of the most stylish show-goers (stylists, editors, buyers) were wearing a piece or two by the brand.

i think it makes total sense to have jcrew at fashion week, if only to represent that style comes at all price points. yes, the scale and speed of production at a brand like jcrew is different than at a more 'high fashion' brand, but the fashion industry has changed so much post-recession and post-internet and i think jcrew's presence is a sign of that. also colors! stripes! sequins! who can argue with those?

more fashion week faves

PETER SOM: loving the color chord of blue, blue, blue, turquoise, and a splash of orange.

DEREK LAM: so sharp it gave me papercuts.

TIMO WEILAND: hey there timo, you are awesome. welcome to my pantheon of designer crushes.

blue crush

Headed out for some fashion week fun. A lot of my friends are in the fashion industry and it's always exciting to spend this crazy week in their world, even if I do always feel a little under-dressed (am I the only one at fashion week not wearing one item of A.Wang?).

all vintage, all the time: levis, dior bag, silk shirt, blue pumps

fashion week favorites

RACHEL COMEY: quirky takes on the tomgirl staples, such as the shorts-suit, especially digging the print made from photographs of cable-knit.

SUNO: congrats Suno on your first runway show, you knocked it out of the park. awesome prints, as always, and some gorgeous new silhouettes. i love it when nice things happen to nice people.

BAND OF OUTSIDERS: hey there cute clothes. can i wear all of you?

investing

Finally took the plunge and bought the Rachel Comey 'Penpal' boots that I've coveted for the past year. They were more than I'd usually spend, but they're just so exactly what I'm looking for, not too biker-y or tough looking but not too dainty or ladylike either. Ever since I started working in high end retail last year I've begun to think of shopping as an investment, and learned from my very chic clients that it's better to own a few perfect, expensive items than a ton of inexpensive, imperfect ones.

also, i just realized i don't own a heel over 3 inches. this is probably because i have a low tolerance for discomfort?
